Is Chanel Moving Into A New Era?
There are moments in fashion when the tectonic plates of tradition must move. During those unsettling times, the responsibility falls to the brands to allow for innovation and risk. The anticipation of Matthieu Blazy’s debut at Chanel has been one of the most closely watched appointments in recent years. His arrival signals not just a new chapter for the fashion house, but a possible rewriting of the brand’s DNA.
Matthieu Blazy Chanel Debut

Blazy is only the fourth designer in Chanel’s entire history. The first being Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself, followed by the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld, and most recently, his trusted successor Virginie Viard. Each of these figures defined their era through a unique lens.
Coco gave women freedom and form, Karl injected a sharp glamour, and Virginie softened the dress codes with French street chic. Blazy steps into this lineage with experience steeped in craftsmanship, his name already synonymous with sculptural tailoring and conceptual refinement from his time at Bottega Veneta.
His debut collection, unveiled to a full house in Paris, did not disappoint. The show was a study in modern femininity, balancing the structural with the sensual, and the iconic with the unexpected.

Paige adds, “Matthieu Blazy’s didn’t just meet expectations, it reset them. The pressure was enormous, but instead of chasing shock value, he went back to the core. He brought back the classic shirt, a crisp symbol of Coco’s love for menswear. But he recut it, left the edges raw and teamed it with bright, bold skirts.”
Chanel’s staples were also reimagined, “Tweed showed up in brighter colours and with fluid textures and jackets were left more relaxed and undone. Pearls were layered en masse in unexpected ways.”
The announcement of Blazy’s appointment sparked an industry-wide buzz that perhaps, after years of safe evolution, might be ready for a true creative renaissance.
What makes Blazy such an intriguing designer is his respect for craftsmanship, whilst refusing to feel bound by the nostalgia of the brand. Speaking previously about “rebuilding from the inside out,” a philosophy that could prove transformative for a brand that has at times seemed too anchored by its own story to challenge the rule book. His Chanel woman, it seems, is less about perfection and more about presence in its pieces, experiencing life in Chanel.

“Even the 2.55 bag got a new story. Crumpled, tactile, defiant. No longer the bag you need to protect, it’s the bag you live with.”
Of course, with a house as storied as Chanel, the balance between evolution and preservation is delicate. Blazy’s challenge will be to maintain that commercial strength and forward momentum while reigniting the cultural spark that made Chanel the symbol that we know it to be. His debut suggests he might spark a revolution.
